The Wanaka Tree, a lone crack willow growing out of Lake Wanaka, is perhaps one of the most photographed trees in the world. Its ethereal beauty, especially during sunrise and sunset, draws countless visitors and photographers each year. However, the increasing foot traffic has taken its toll. Tourists seeking the perfect shot have damaged the tree’s roots, threatening its survival.

The Kea, a native alpine parrot,  is known for its curious nature and vibrant plumage. Found predominantly in the South Island's mountainous regions, the Kea is both a delight and a challenge for visitors, often interacting playfully with humans. However, these birds are endangered, facing threats from human encroachment, lead poisoning, and climate change. Conservation efforts are critical to protect this unique species from further decline.

Queenstown, often dubbed the adventure capital of the world, offers a blend of natural beauty and adrenaline-pumping activities. From the stunning shores of Lake Wakatipu to the nearby Remarkables mountain range, the opportunities for photography are endless. However, the town faces significant environmental issues such as waste management, water pollution, and the impact of continuous development on the natural environment.

While the South Island of New Zealand offers unparalleled beauty and photographic opportunities, it is crucial to address the environmental challenges that accompany these attractions. Sustainable tourism practices and conservation efforts are essential to ensure that these natural wonders can be enjoyed by future generations.
