Golden Dragon is one of them.
Born in 1973 at the iconic Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai, Golden Dragon wasn't just a restaurant—it became the benchmark for Chinese fine dining in India. For over five decades, it has welcomed generations of diners, creating memories over bowls of comforting soups, handcrafted dim sums, and legendary Cantonese and Sichuan classics.
During my recent visit to the newly opened Golden Dragon at Taj Surajkund, what fascinated me most wasn't just the food—it was the conversation.
Speaking with Executive Chef Anuj Mathur, I got a glimpse into the immense effort behind bringing such a celebrated legacy to Delhi-NCR. From countless menu trials and recipe calibrations to recreating signature flavours that generations of guests associate with Golden Dragon, every detail was scrutinized. The challenge wasn't merely opening a restaurant; it was preserving a legacy while introducing it to a new city.
Alongside Chef Tong and his team, the focus remained clear: honor the heritage, respect the memories, and deliver the same sense of authenticity that made Golden Dragon an institution.
And then came the food.
The flaky radish dim sum was a revelation—delicate layers giving way to a beautifully balanced filling, showcasing the finesse that defines Golden Dragon. Equally memorable was the nostalgic sweet corn soup, a dish that instantly transported me back to the era when a visit to a Chinese restaurant was a family occasion and this comforting bowl was always the perfect beginning.
What struck me most was how effortlessly Golden Dragon balances nostalgia with relevance. The classics remain timeless, yet every dish feels thoughtfully executed for today's diner.
More than fifty years after it first opened its doors, Golden Dragon continues to prove why true culinary institutions never fade—they simply create new memories for the next generation.
Mumbai's legend now has a
new address in Delhi-NCR, and it feels right at home.
